- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon yeast
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 2 tablespoon lard or vegetable shortening
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
2. Add the warm water and lard, and mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
6. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place on a baking sheet.
7. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
8. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
