Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoon lard or vegetable shortening

Instructions 

  1. 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. 2. Add the warm water and lard, and mix until a dough forms.
  3. 3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. 4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. 6. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place on a baking sheet.
  7. 7. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. 8. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
