Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk warmed
- ¼ cup butter melted
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup currants or raisins
For the Cross
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 5 tablespoons water
For the Glaze
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup water
Instructions
- 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Add the warm milk and melted butter, and mix until smooth. Add the beaten egg and mix well.
- 2. Gradually add the remaining flour and ground cinnamon, mixing until a soft dough forms. Stir in the currants or raisins.
- 3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 4. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place on a greased baking tray. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). To make the cross, mix the flour and water to form a paste. Pipe the paste in a cross shape on top of each bun.
- 6. Bake the buns for 15 minutes, or until golden brown. While the buns are baking, prepare the glaze by heating the sugar and water in a small saucepan until the sugar dissolves.
- 7. Brush the hot glaze over the warm buns as soon as they come out of the oven. Let cool on a wire rack.
